Noise gate is functional where you have a quiet continuous background noise that is noticeable in the gaps between people speaking much louder than the noise. It functions by muting the audio during the quiet noise but letting ALL the sound, both voice and noise, come through when people are talking.

The theory is that while people are talking, the quieter sound is much less noticeable. A Gate will never remove noise during the parts of the audio you want to hear. It's also nonfunctional when the noise is close to or louder than the part you want to keep. In your situation you probably need a noise reduction plugin, not a gate. A very good suggestion.

In fact I have allready discovered that Audacity has a free plugin like that and I have tested it in the past few hours. The problem is I can not find a place in the sound track of the file where there is only this humming noise and nothing else. The humming noise is always at the background and there are other voices, sounds etc which I would rather keep if possible.

Therefore the question remains the same. Can anyone come up with some parameters value advice or point to a library of sets of parameters which I can use?
